Trailer for Texas Thriller 'Bad Turn Worse' starring Mackenzie Davis and Mark Pellegrino
Not every festival darling can be like Whiplash, sustaining buzz for months until the eventual theatrical release. More often than not these films turn out like the gritty, violent Texas crime thriller Bad Turn Worse (formerly We've Gotta get Out of this Place), which debuted at TIFF in 2013 with a lot of praise, quickly securing a multiplatform deal with Starz and looking as if it might be genre sleeper. In the year since very little has been seen or heard about it, but with the film set to finally open next month an impressive new trailer has arrived.
Directed by Simon and Zeke Hawkins, Bad Turn Worse stars Mackenzie Davis (Breathe In, What If), Jeremy Allen White (Shameless), and Mark Pellegrino (Lost) in a psychotic turn, the story centers on a group of Texas teens who steal from a sociopathic criminal and are forced to pay him back. To do it they must steal from his boss (William Devane), but as noted in the trailer's ominous opening, "things are not what they seem". Just for the presence of Davis alone I'm looking forward to this one, but I also love the noirish tone that reminds me of a Joe Lansdale novel.
Bad Turn Worse hits VOD and theaters on Nov. 14th.
