Jon M. Chu to Direct '90s Dance Comedy 'Can't Touch This'
The Step Up films may not be what one would think of as the launching pad to a great directorial career, but Jon M. Chu has made the best use of them possible. He's since directed G.I. Joe: Retaliation, recently wrapped on the live-action Jem and the Holograms, and next he'll be at the helm for Now You See Me 2. And now he's headed back to the throwback world of dance with the dance comedy, Can't Touch This.
While details are scarce at this point, Deadline says the film will be a "high school dance comedy set in the golden era of the 1990s." Chu and his producing partner Hieu Ho developed the story, setting Annie Mebane and Steve Basilone (Community, The Goldbergs) to write the script. Clearly the title is inspired by the MC Hammer track "U Can't Touch This", but we don't know how far down the hip-hop rabbit hole this thing is going to go. Hammer was obviously best known for his energetic dancing (and parachute pants), and if we're lucky maybe we'll get to see some other groups known for their moves on the dance floor. Kid 'n Play, maybe?
