I've always been a cat person. Get chased around as a child by enough loose dogs and that will happen. But even I'm emotionally susceptible to movies about man's best friend, and this year we've seen a bunch of them (The Drop, John Wick). We've all shed a tear or two at the story of a dog's journey to be reunited with its master, but the movie White God takes that to incredible new heights and it looks tremendous.
Directed by Kornél Mundruczó, the Cannes award-winning film explores the societal tensions in Europe through a fictional story seen from the canine perspective. And not just one canine, but what appears to be every dog in Europe. The story begins when a young girl is forced to give up her dog, Hagan, because The State has deemed all mixed breeds "unfit". Hagan begins a dangerous journey to get back to his beloved owner, along the way rallying other discarded dogs in a house pet revolution.
White God is part of next months' Sundance lineup so I'll do my best to check it out. The film opens on March 27th.
