New Red Band Trailer and Poster for 'Straight Outta Compton' Hits the Streets

"Our art is a reflection of our reality", so says Ice Cube (played by his son O'Shea Jackson Jr.) in the new red band trailer for N.W.A. biopic, Straight Outta Compton. The rap supergroup took the music world by storm in 1987 and introduced it to a street lifestyle that kids emulated, parents hated, and cops wanted to see shut down. And while the likes of Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, Eazy-E, MC Ren, and DJ Yella would become household names, they were still just a bunch of kids in the midst of one crazy wild ride, and it very rarely went smoothly.

Perhaps the coolest aspects of this trailer are the introduction by Cube and Dre, which hopefully makes it into the finished film somehow, and the increased presence of Paul Giamatti as manager Jerry Heller. Heller was at the center of the group's internal squabbles, and his attempts to screw Ice Cube out of owed money was the main reason why he left the group. In all this looks like as perfect of a film about N.W.A. as one could have hoped for with the cast spot-on in their portrayals and the music helping to capture the energized mood of the era. There was never another time quite like this in rap music and director F. Gary Gray seems to have hit on that.

Straight Outta Compton opens August 14th 2015, and chalk this up as one of my most anticipated movies of the year.
