Jake Gyllenhaal Laces Up the Gloves in First Trailer for Boxing Drama 'Southpaw'

No sport captures the strength of the human spirit better than boxing. It's mano-a-mano, a perfect allegory for one's battle against a world that seems to be against him. And it looks like Antoine Fuqua and Jake Gyllenhaal are going to try and tell exactly that story with the boxing drama, Southpaw, which after a long and troubled development steps in the ring with its first trailer.

Gyllenhaal, who has been on a roll with Prisoners, Enemy, and Nightcrawler, plays a boxer who is taking too many punches inside and outside the ring. When a rash act of violence leads to the destruction of his personal and professional life, he must find a way to fight and reclaim what was lost. Rachel McAdams, 50 Cent, and Forest Whitaker co-star, with Sons of Anarchy's Kurt Sutter having written the screenplay. He's not going for subtlety here, folks, but this is a boxing flick and they tend to be as nuanced as a right hook to the gut.

Southpaw laces up the gloves on July 31st.
