*UPDATE* 'The X-Files' Confirmed to Return as Limited "Event" Series

*UPDATE* It's official. After last night's story suggested it was close to happening, The X-Files has been given a six-episode limited series order by Fox Television. David Duchovny, Gillian Anderson, and series creator Chris Carter will all return with production to begin this summer. *

The truth is out there, X-Files fans, and it looks like the fan favorite series is coming back to tie up a few loose ends. Rumors about a return have been swirling around for months, but it was back in January that Fox actually confirmed talks were happening. And now the Daily Mail, during a piece on Gillian Anderson's upcoming projects, says she has begun negotiations to return for a limited run "event" series.

Anderson and of course David Duchovny are expected to return for what would be a six-episode season of The X-Files. Writers from the original show are expected back to tie up some loose ends and bring the series to a final resolution. If a deal can be worked out filming could begin as soon as this June with series creator Chris Carter on board. TVWise adds that Fox plans to make further announcements this May.

All of this depends on whether Anderson and Duchovny's schedules can be worked out, but given their mutual enthusiasm for more X-Files it's bound to happen. Stay tuned.
