1. Avengers: Age of Ultron- $77.2M/$312.8M
Earth's mightiest heroes dropped a typical 60% from last week, earning $77.M for a total of $312M, which is still a ways off The Avengers' $373M two-week total in 2012. But look, Marvel and Disney aren't crying about these numbers in the least, especially when the film has earned $875M worldwide and should crack $1B with ease. The key thing, at least in my opinion, will be how this film powers Ant-Man in a couple of months. Iron Man 3's $1.2B was launched on the excitement generated by The Avengers, but there doesn't seem to be the same level of positive buzz this time. We shall see.
2. Hot Pursuit (review here)- $13.3M
Female comedies have seen a resurgence of late, especially coming off last year's $220M-grossing The Heat, but apparently audience favor doesn't extend to Hot Pursuit. The Reese Witherspoon/Sofia Vergara crime comedy opened with a mediocre $13M, which has to be far below studio expectations. A slew of bad reviews probably didn't help, and this one will have to make up some ground to clear the $35M production budget. Maybe it will play better overseas?
3. The Age of Adaline- $5.6M/$31.5M
4. Furious 7- $5.2M/$338.4M
5. Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2- $5.1M/$58M
6. Ex Machina- $3.4M/$15.7M
7. Home- $3M/$162.1M
8. Woman in Gold- $1.6M/$26.9M
9. Cinderella- $1.5M/$196.1M
10. Unfriended- $1.4M/$30.9M
Meanwhile, Pitch Perfect 2 tuned up overseas with a strong $8.8M. The a capella comedy led by Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson opens here next weekend.
