Another popular animated series from the '80s is getting a live-action film later this year, and it's not GI Joe, Transformers, or Robotech. It's Jem and the Holograms, based on the cartoon and toy line about the "truly outrageous" all-girl rock band. The film is being directed by Jon M. Chu, who coincidentally directed GI Joe: Retaliation, and after we had a first image a couple of months ago, a better look at the band has been revealed.
Aubrey Peeples (Nashville) stars as Jerica Benton, who transforms into the pink-haired Jem when she's ready to rock. Stefanie Scott (Insidious Chapter 3) is her sister Kimber, with Hayley Kyoko and Aurora Perrineau as fellow band members Aja and Shana. For those looking for a little more of an '80s vibe, Molly Ringwald plays their guardian, Aunt Bailey.
Despite all of the nostalgia, this is still a modern story and social media's influence on the music world is at the center of it. The band becomes an online sensation and according to Chu they will have to deal with the overnight fame....
"It's actually about a group of young people who are going to be inundated with this idea of fame and fortune and products and stuff, and within all that, how do you stay true to who you really are?" he says. "That's the real soul of the movie."
Also starring Juliette Lewis and Ryan Guzman, Jem and the Holograms opens October 23rd. [USAToday]
