Disney May be Planning a Reboot of 'The Princess Diaries'

Disney has shown zero reluctance when it comes to tapping their back catalog of hits for updated retellings, sequels, spinoffs, and more. One that has been mentioned frequently as a possibility is The Princess Diaries, the royal comedy that helped launch Anne Hathaway's career in 2001, followed by a less successful sequel in 2004 that marked Chris Pine's feature debut. A new rumor surfacing at The Tracking Board says Disney is finally ready to move forward on a third film as a reboot of the franchise.

The site's story doesn't reveal much, listing no writers or director at this stage, but their sources say the plot may or may not include Hathaway's character, Mia Thermopolis, a gawky, awkward California teen who becomes princess to a small European kingdom. The films are based on the popular series of novels by Meg Cabot, which to the best of my knowledge all centered on Mia. So if Hathaway's not involved then it's safe to assume this would be a brand new story, which was also the case for The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement.

We'll see if any of this comes to be, but this sounds like a chance for Disney to launch a new young starlet into her own major comedy franchise.
