Finally! Starz Greenlights Neil Gaiman's 'American Gods' TV Series

After what seems like an eternity, Neil Gaiman's amazing 2001 novel American Gods is finally coming to TV with Starz giving the series a green light. Bryan Fuller (Dead Like Me) and Michael Green (Heroes) will write and act as showrunners with Gaiman himself on board to exec-produce, a fact which gives me a great deal of confidence this will actually happen.

An American Gods series has been in the works for years, with HBO the first with plans to adapt the novel which takes place in a world where gods and other mythological beings walk the earth. An ex-convict turned bodyguard named Shadow takes a job protecting the mysterious Mr. Wednesday(who is really Odin), and finds himself in the middle of a war between the old gods and the modern ones. After HBO passed, FremantleMedia picked up the rights and now they're working together with Starz to make this a reality. Here's what Gaiman had to say...

"I am thrilled, ‎scared, delighted, nervous and a ball of glorious anticipation. The team that is going to bring the world of American Gods to the screen has been assembled like the master criminals in a caper movie: I’m relieved and confident that my baby is in good hands. Now we finally move to the exciting business that fans have been doing for the last dozen years: casting our Shadow, our Wednesday, our Laura..."

This has been a long road but as a fan of the book, its follow-up Ananasi Boys, and pretty much everything Gaiman writes, this is a happy day. There's absolutely no concern moving it from HBO to Starz, either, as both networks are unafraid when it comes to tackling mature themes in high quality shows.
