Sanaa Lathan is a 'Flyy Girl' for Lionsgate
A project that I have been wondering about for a couple of years is Lionsgate's adaptation of Omar Tyree's Flyy Girl series of urban novels. Sanaa Lathan (The Best Man Holiday) mentioned it in an off-hand remark some time ago, and then nothing was heard about it until a few months ago when Dear White People's Effie Brown came on to produce. Now The Tracking Board says the project is ready to go with Lathan on board to star.
Nicole Jefferson-Asher will write the script, telling the story of workaholic media mogul Tracey Ellison, who has put her career success ahead of her family and personal life. Naturally, she'll be forced to reevaluate those priorities and learn what happiness truly means. Tyree's novels were about more than her career, though. They begin in the '70s and follow Tracey from the age of 6 all the way up to adulthood as she deals with bad relationships, drugs, her parents' divorce, and more. We may see Lionsgate decide to focus solely on her adult years.
Any chance to give the talented Lathan some time in the spotlight is a good thing, though. Her next film is romantic thriller The Perfect Guy, which looks pretty campy. She'll also be seen in Now You See Me: The Second Act, and she'll return for a sequel to The Best Man Holiday.
