The 'Independence Day 2' Plot Sounds A Lot Like 'Robotech'
Roland Emmerich has been plotting Independence Day 2 for a few years now, and it has undergone a number of changes. Once eyed as a two-part film titled ID Forever, it was then changed to a single film due out next year. But recently that has changed and there will be at least two more follow-ups to the hit 1996 alien invasion film. And while we've heard Emmerich reveal small plot details here and there, it isn't until now that an official synopsis has arrived.
With Independence Day 2 expected to be pushed heavily by 20th Century Fox at next week's Licensing Expo in Las Vegas, an information sheet reveals the film's Robotech-inspired plot.
After Independence Day redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter delivers global catastrophe on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.
Emmerich has previously said the story would take place around 20 years later, and reunites a number of familiar characters. Jeff Goldblum, Vivica A. Fox, Brent Spiner, Judd Hirsch, and Bill Pullman will reprise their roles, joined by new additions Liam Hemsworth, Jessie Usher, Maika Monroe, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Joey King, Chin Han, William Fichtner, and Sela Ward. Independence Day 2 opens June 24th 2016.
