Marc Webb Shares his Thoughts on Losing the Spider-Man Franchise

After Sony got off to a promising start with The Amazing Spider-Man, the expectation was that the success and big box office would continue. Unfortunately, the sequel was a critical and financial failure that sent the studio spinning to try and find a way to keep the franchise alive. While a number of spinoffs were considered, including Sinister Six, Venom, and a female-led Spidey film, a deal was eventually struck that would bring the character into Marvel's universe for the first time. That meant the director who had overseen the most recent movies, Marc Webb, was definitely out.

Neither Webb nor Garfield have had anything to say about the move, but the director opened up to MTV and still has some regrets about letting it go...

It’s sad a little bit to surrender that in a way. But it’s as it must be I guess. I think there's a huge capacity for reinvention of the realm of the Spider-Man universe… there's a lot of different way so interpret that character... so I'm curious to see how that evolves."

But he also seems excited for the direction the character is going, and is interested in seeing what incoming director Jon Watts, another music video vet, can do.

Marvel's Spider-Man opens July 28th 2017.
