Smile! There's an Emoji Movie on the Way from Sony
It's one thing to make a horror movie in which an invisible stalker murders a bunch of people over social media. That can be done, although it may take some pretzel logic to make it make sense. However it's another thing entirely to make an entire movie about the irritating Emoji everyone (including me) uses to communicate nowadays. Well, Sony Pictures is going to try and make that happen.
Sony Pictures Animation, the folks behind Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, won a tough bidding war to acquire a pitch for an Emoji film. Anthony Leondis (Kung Fu Panda: Secrets of the Masters) will direct from a screenplay by Eric Siegel that will somehow build a story around the ideograms that have spread like wildfire since debuting in Japan.
Plus, since Emoji are in the public domain anybody can make one of these films pretty easily without having to worry about intellectual property concerns. Deadline adds that other Emoji projects are being shopped around so there may be multiple movies from different studios competing against one another. Aaargh!
