'Thor 2' Writer to give 'Masters of the Universe' Yet Another Rewrite

A Masters of the Universe film has been in development longer than Skeletor has been trying to defeat He-Man in battle. Warner Bros. once had control of the Mattel property's film rights, and had hired Jon M. Chu (G.I. Joe: Retaliation) to direct it. That never happened, the film moved over to Sony, and numerous writers have taken shots at the script. The most recent was Jeff Wadlow (Kick-Ass 2), but apparently his screenplay didn't get the job done because now one of Marvel's top writers is coming aboard to give it a shot.

Christopher Yost, co-writer of Thor: The Dark World and Thor: Ragnarok, is giving Masters of the Universe a rewrite. Presumably this means he'll be going over what Wadlow did before, but even after all these years there's really no idea what the film will be about or how closely it will stick to the familiar storyline. Masters of the Universe was created as a Mattel toy line in 1982 and launched a series of cartoons, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe and eventual spinoff, She-Ra: Princess of Power. The characters were then brought to the big screen in a 1987 live-action movie starring Dolph Lundgren.

Perhaps Yost's familiarity writing blond alien superheroes will help him to get Sony's Masters of the Universe off the ground finally. [Variety]
