Scott Cooper May Direct Hunting Drama 'American Wolf' with Leonardo DiCaprio Producing
After Out of the Furnace didn't make a lot of waves and was panned by critics, Scott Cooper looks to be bouncing back in a big way with Whitey Bulger biopic, Black Mass. However he's already looking ahead to what comes next, and The Wrap reports he's in talks to direct an adaptation of American Wolf, Nate Blakeslee's upcoming non-fiction book that deals with the hot topic of big game hunting.
American Wolf centers on a hunter who accidentally kills an endangered American wolf in Yellowstone National Park, only to have it turn out to be O-Six, a popular female alpha wolf collared and tracked by researchers. The hunter would form an unlikely friendship with the park researcher working with wolves. There was a large outcry from the public over O-Six's death as the wolf had an impact on the lives of the humans around her.
This is just one of the many animal rights dramas Leonardo DiCaprio came aboard to produce last year, but he couldn't have known the subject of poaching would be such a big part of the national discussion right now. Obviously the killing of Cecil the Lion is still fresh in many minds and they'll be paying a lot of attention to how Cooper's film develops.
