It's pretty easy to calculate what the biggest hits of the summer were: Jurassic World, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Inside Out, and Minions easily top the list, while a surprise film like Straight Outta Compton performed beyond expectations. But for every blockbuster there will be one or two movies that fail miserably, both here and abroad. This summer you can probably guess what they are: Tomorrowland, Fantastic Four, are obviously counted among the biggest flops. Just how badly did these movies hurt their respective studios, though?
THR has put together a list of the summer's worst flops based on budget, and there are some big names who took a hit, like George Clooney, Cameron Crowe, and Adam Sandler. Check it out:
Budget: $190 million
Global gross: $208.4 million
Expected loss: $120 million-$150 million
Fantastic Four
Budget: $125 million
Global gross: $146.7 million
Expected loss: $80 million-$100 million
Budget: $88 million-plus
Global gross: $186.4 million
Expected loss: $75 million-plus
Budget: $75 million-plus
Global gross: $72.1 million
Expected loss: $80 million-plus
Budget: $37 million-plus
Global gross: $26.2 million
Expected loss: $65 million
All of these are interesting for different reasons. Tomorrowland was wrapped in years of secrecy, too much secrecy as it turned out, and not even George Clooney's star power could help draw audiences in. It appears 20th Century Fox has already decided to move ahead on a Fantastic Four sequel but these numbers may cause them to reconsider. Everyone hated Pixels (except me) and the upshot for Adam Sandler haters (like me) is that he won't be seen on the big screen for a while thanks to his four-picture deal with Netflix. The Man from UNCLE is still out in theaters and may recover somewhat, but even so these are disappointing numbers for a film with name recognition, some big stars, and generally decent reviews. Aloha has the smallest budget of the bunch and still managed to lose double that, which goes to show how badly it performed everywhere. That's despite arguably the starriest cast of the summer and an inviting Hawaiian locale. Don't expect Crowe to be entrusted with a budget that size for a long time.
