'The Mummy' Could Be Female In Universal's Reboot

Universal's kickoff to their "shared universe" of classic movie monsters got off to a mediocre start with Dracula Untold, a film so forgettable I had to look up its title just now. But they're pushing ahead and the next film is a reboot of The Mummy, which has Alex Kurtzman (People Like Us) directing from a screenplay by Prometheus writer Jon Spaihts. And apparently what Spaihts has come up with could be a major change from the prior films by introducing a female mummy.

According to THR, casting is underway on the film and part of that search is looking for an actress to play a female version of the monster. This is hardly set in stone, though, and depends on how the casting process goes, so we could still see a male version of the creature. There has never been a female mummy on the big screen before, beginning with Boris Karloff's take on the character in 1932 and stretching through the recent trilogy of films from director Stephen Sommers.

If they do go with a female mummy hopefully they won't use some of the Halloween costumes that are out there.

The Mummy reboot opens March 24th 2017.
