A 'Call of Duty' Cinematic Universe Could be On the Way
Activision Blizzard isn't willing to rest on their laurels, not with their latest game Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 already selling into the millions in just a few days of release. They already have Duncan Jones' Warcraft film on the way and have released a trailer that has some proclaiming it will be the first great video game movie. And now they've announced an entirely new studio just for making movies and TV shows, with plans of building an expansive cinematic universe for their most popular franchise.
According to THR, the newly-formed Activision Blizzard Studios are developing a Call of Duty movie which they hope to have ready by 2018 or 2019. The first-person military shooter series has sold over 175 million copies making it one of the most successful franchises ever, which may be why they're seeing $$$ at the prospect of a Call of Duty cinematic universe. Yes, they're going the 'Avengers' route with this one, although it's unclear what that would entail.
The studios' first project is a Skylanders animated TV series, which is smart since it was one of the first games to use the toys-to-life approach similar to Disney Infinity. That means it's got the whole merchandising side built right in and should bolster sales of the games and toys in a huge way. The series will feature the voices of Justin Long, Ashley Tisdale, Jonathan Banks, and Norm Macdonald.
