No 'Salt' Sequel, But A TV Series Is On The Way

TV has become the home where movie franchises go to die. Take a look at what's going on with Salt, the hit action flick fronted by Angelina Jolie back in 2010. Sony has been trying and failing ever since to mount a big screen sequel, tapping a couple of screenwriters who were never able to convince Jolie it was worth it to return. And finally the studio has given up on that idea and decided to turn Salt into a TV series as a way of keeping the franchise alive.

According to Screen Daily, Sony is developing a Salt series, which will be pitched to buyers and broadcasters at the European Film Market.

“We want to bring it to Europe in a completely different way,” said Diego Suarez, senior vice president of international television production at Sony.

This may sound like a terrible idea, but it may actually be the right path to take. The original film performed well, earning more than $290M worldwide mostly on the strength of Jolie as an action hero. She played a CIA agent accused of being a Russian spy, and goes to incredible lengths to prove her innocence. It's fertile ground for a network show, although it's unlikely Jolie will have anything to do with it.
