'Avengers: Infinity War' To Introduce New Characters, End Next Marvel Phase

With Captain America: Civil War expected to be the biggest (and longest) Marvel film yet, one might think the Russo Brothers would want to slow things down a little. But they've never really done "slow" or "small" since they began directing films for Marvel, and certainly that won't be the case with Avengers: Infinity War, the two-part epic that is expected to bring together every hero for one humongous battle with the villainous Thanos. But even with so many characters set to be a part of it, there's going to be room for more.

Speaking with Forbes, Joe and Anthony Russo revealed that some new faces will be entering the superhero mix, without divulging who they might be, of course.

Joe Russo said,  "[There are] new characters that are going to appear in 'Avengers: Infinity War.' It’s a big sprawling ambitious movie, it’s about as ambitious as movies get and it should be, and the title alone indicates that there will be an incredible scape and scope to it."

With the introduction of characters such as Black Panther, Spider-Man, and Doctor Strange, it's clear that Marvel is moving forward beyond the original team members. Robert Downey Jr. has already wrapped up his Iron Man trilogy, while Captain America and Thor are about to have their solo franchises completed. And according to Joe Russo, Avengers: Infinity War could mark a clean break between the new and old guards...

"It is intended to be the entire culmination of the Marvel cinematic universe and, in many ways, the end to that part of it. But we don’t even have the first draft in on that script yet; we’re still in the outline phase. It’s hard not to talk about it too specifically now only because of spoilers but also because we’re still figuring it out."

Part of what needs to be figured out is Spider-Man (Tom Holland), and what his role in 'Infinity War' will be. The directors say his involvement is "to be determined", but with a solo film coming in 2017 it's likely his role will be significant. And for those who were a little disappointed by his costume in the recent 'Civil War' trailer, the Russos say to just relax because there's "still effects work that needs to be done on it". Fair enough.

You may want to relax and settle in for the long haul when 'Civil War' arrives on May 6th, because the Russos are teasing not just the usual post-credits scene, but possibly multiple scenes....

"We can’t say who is going to be in it but we can say that there certainly could be one, or two, maybe three. We can confirm that you should stay sat in your seats when the movie is done,"

Maybe one of them will introduce Captain Marvel, finally?  Avengers: Infinity War part 1 opens May 4th 2018, followed by part 2 on May 3rd 2019.
