Christopher Nolan Casts One Direction's Harry Styles In 'Dunkirk'
While Christopher Nolan has set Tom Hardy, Oscar-winning Bridge of Spies star Mark Rylance, and Kenneth Branagh for his WWII film, Dunkirk, the cast will mostly be made up of unknowns. Even then, Nolan has found a way to keep things interesting, and the next actor who has been offered a role is One Direction's Harry Styles.
Deadline reports that Styles could be making his feature debut in the film, which is inspired by Operation Dynamo in which hundreds of thousands of trapped British Expeditionary Force and Allied soldiers were evacuated from the beaches of Dunkirk in 1940. The site adds that British actors Jack Lowden (A United Kingdom) and Aneurin Barnard (The White Queen) are up for what could be lead roles, while The Wrap includes total newcomer Fionn Whitehead in the mix. Nolan is apparently very high on Whitehead, who currently doesn't even have an agent representing him.
So it's clear Nolan is looking to build new stars with this one, and chances are he will. He's going all out for authenticity, too, securing actual WWII French battleship Maillé-Brézé for use in the film. Dunkirk begins shooting in May for release on July 21st 2017.
