Even in the headline for THR's story on Joe Swanberg's (Digging for Fire) latest move it labels him a "Mumblecore" director. That has to sting, considering he and others have tried hard not to be pigeon-holed as such. But there it is, even as he moves away from feature films completely and into a new series for Netflix that features an all-star cast.
Swanberg is set to write, direct, and exec-produce Easy, a half-hour comedy anthology series following Chicago characters as they cope with love, sex, culture, and technology. Orlando Bloom, Malin Akerman, Michael Chernus, Marc Maron, Elizabeth Reaser, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Jake Johnson, Aya Cash, Dave Franco, Jane Adams, Hannibal Burress, and more are set to star, continuing Swanberg's penchant for grabbing big names for intimate projects. He's also worked with most of the cast in multiple films and should know how to tailor material to what they do best.
Apparently this bears some resemblance to Swanberg's web series, Young American Bodies, which currently airs on IFC.
