New 'X-Men: Apocalypse' Trailer Teases a Desolate Future

Like Marvel's titular mutant superteam, 20th Century Fox's X-Men franchise is undergoing an evolution. This summer brings X-Men: Apocalypse, the third and final film in the trilogy that began with X-Men: First Class, and it promises to introduce an all new generation of heroes led by Professor Charles Xavier (James McAvoy). But once it's over, what's to come next with most of the A-list cast and presumably director Bryan Singer departing?

The latest, and best, trailer for the film provides glimpses of what the future of the franchise could look like. Oscar Isaac plays the immortal villain Apocalypse, and he's surrounded by his "Four Horsemen", comprised of Magneto (Michael Fassbender), and three characters we know to be X-Men at some point: Psylocke (Olivia Munn), Angel (Ben Hardy), and Storm (Alexandra Shipp). The only ones who can put an end to Apocalypse's reign of terror are Xavier and his new band of X-Men, including Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), Beast (Nicholas Hoult), Quicksilver (Evan Peters), Havok (Lucas Till), and newcomers Cyclops (Tye Sheridan), Jean Grey (Sophie Turner), Jubilee (Lana Condor), and Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee).

So even if Lawrence, Hoult, and Fassbender leave, there's a swell of stars who can easily take over when Fox inevitably announces X-Men 4.  And don't forget, we may have to factor in Deadpool, Channing Tatum's Gambit, and potentially a new Wolverine into the equation somewhere.

X-Men: Apocalypse opens May 27th.
