Fans have been hoping for a Punisher TV series since the moment Marvel retrieved the rights to the popular vigilante character. That came after two failed movies from another studio, so rather than trying to give Punisher a big screen reboot, he was brought in to stir things up in the second season of Netflix's Daredevil series. And the response to Jon Bernthal as the skull-shirt-wearing antihero has been great; enough that Marvel made the move to give Punisher his own series.
Marvel and Netflix have formally announced they are moving ahead on The Punisher with Bernthal reprising his role as Frank Castle. While details are light at this point, Steve Lightfoot (Hannibal) has been named as showrunner. The network couldn't wait to hype up the news on Twitter, though...
The Punisher is back. Locked and loaded.https://t.co/nGKCa2taEV— Netflix US (@netflix) April 29, 2016
This move has been expected for a long time because Punisher always seemed like an obvious choice for a series, and Daredevil definitely left the door open for this to happen. It's the first new addition to Netflix's slate of Marvel shows since their deal began, and while we don't know when production will begin or when it will air, The Punisher probably won't arrive until after the big Defenders crossover.
So who do we want to see as part of Punisher's supporting cast? Microchip? Maybe a return of the Kingpin?
