1. The Angry Birds Movie (review here)- $39M
Soaring ahead of Captain America: Civil War for first place is Sony and Rovio's The Angry Birds Movie, obviously based on the mobile game that was stupid popular a few years ago. If the film had come out then who knows what its numbers might have been, but surely they would have surpassed this $39M debut. Worldwide it sits at $82M and should perform decently well overall. The big news may not be that it beat out 'Civil War', but that it was the top new release of the week.
2. Captain America: Civil War- $33.1M/$347.3M
3. Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising (review here)- $21.7M
In what can only be considered as a major disappointment, Neighbors 2 opened third with $21.7M, roughly half of what its predecessor did just two years ago. It's genuinely surprising given the plethora of strong reviews, many of which consider it superior to the original, and that the entire cast has returned. And that cast isn't insignificant since we're talking Seth Rogen and Zac Efron, both proven box office heavyweights. Who knows what the reasons are? Maybe guys got scared off by the mostly-female supporting cast? Fortunately it only cost about $35M overall, and has earned $52M with overseas numbers factored in, so the good news is it won't be a flop. But will it be enough to warrant a third movie?
4. The Nice Guys (review here)- $11.2M
This really was a great week for comedy, which makes the disappointing numbers for Neighbors 2 and The Nice Guys so surprising. Shane Black's '70s action-comedy was led by the powerhouse duo of Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe, an oddball pair not unlike the director's previous efforts in Lethal Weapon, The Last Boy Scout, and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. The $50M crime caper only hit $11.2M and will need to have seriously long legs to break even, but even that may not be worth it for Warner Bros. who will see this as a totally failed experiment. When fans start complaining the studio only puts out DC Comics movies and big tentpole features, well this is a reason why they do.
5. The Jungle Book- $11M/$327.4M
6. Money Monster- $7M/$27.1M
Jodie Foster's star-studded financial thriller hit the break even point with $27M. So if you invested in Money Monster....well, you're still not exactly thrilled.
7. The Darkness- $2.3M/$8.4M
8. Zootopia- $1.7M/$334.4M
9. The Huntsman: Winter's War- $1.19M/$46.6M
10. Mother's Day- $1.11M/$31.2M
