Matthew McConaughey Leads A Rebellion In The 'Free State Of Jones' Trailer
Is Matthew McConaughey on his way to another Oscar? Surely that's what STX Entertainment is hoping for out of Gary Ross' Civil War-era drama, Free State of Jones. But they may find movies on this particular era a little crowded with Nate Parker's Birth of a Nation looking like the popular choice this awards season. Could that change? The latest trailer is hoping to do just that.
The film is based on the true story of Newton Knight, a Mississippi farmer who defected from the Confederacy and led an armed rebellion of freed slaves and rebels against the Southern forces. He attempted to start a "Free State of Jones" in Jones County, a mixed-race community that went against the state's laws.
This is a shorter trailer than the previous one but it's also better for not revealing so much. It certainly looks like the kind of performance that should get McConaughey some attention, but the summer release date probably tells us what to actually expect. Also starring Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Keri Russell, and Mahershala Ali, Free State of Jones opens June 24th.
