Charlie Kaufman-Scripted 'Chaos Walking' Lands Doug Liman As Director

Of all the interesting turns in the career of Charlie Kaufman (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Anomalisa), one of the strangest was his decision four years ago to pen YA thriller, Chaos Walking, based on The Knife Of Never Letting Go, the first book in Patrick Ness' trilogy. Robert Zemeckis came aboard to direct shortly thereafter, but he's now out of the picture with another big name director taking over.

THR reports Doug Liman (Edge of Tomorrow) will direct Chaos Walking, with Kaufman's script still very much in play. The story takes place in a dystopian future where everyone can hear one another's thoughts, making privacy extinct and chaos the norm. That is until Todd Hewitt discovers a place of complete silence, only to discover it is a girl named Viola who is creating it. The two are forced to go on the run as a result.

Lionsgate is behind this one, and since they are the same studio that gave us The Hunger Games and Divergent, it's clear to see why as both franchises are either finished or struggling. Production begins this fall, which probably means trouble for Fox's X-Men spinoff, Gambit, that he has been waiting patiently to direct. We can likely assume this isn't a good thing for the sniper flick The Wall, which Liman replaced Gambit with and was supposed to begin shooting soon.
