James Wan's 'Malignant Man' Lands Brad Peyton As Director
Now that James Wan's The Conjuring 2 has broken the summer sequel curse, he's ready to move forward on a project that was announced more than two years ago. Unfortunately, he won't be moving ahead in the same capacity as originally expected. Back in 2014 Wan was attached to direct a big screen adaptation of his Boom! Studios comic book, Malignant Man, but now THR reports it will be Brad Peyton (San Andreas) taking the helm.
Wan will stay on board as a producer with newcomer Zak Olkewicz writing the screenplay. The comic was published through 4-issues in 2011 and centered on Alan Gates, a terminal cancer patient who discovers that his tumor is actually a mysterious parasite that grants him incredible powers. Using his newfound abilities, Alan fights against an evil army just beneath society's surface while unlocking the secrets to his past.
It's no surprise Wan isn't directing the film himself as he's one of the busiest filmmakers around. With Aquaman taking up most of his time for the next couple of years, Wan has even suggested to EW that he may not have time to return for The Conjuring 3. Meanwhile, Peyton is continuing his working relationship with Dwayne Johnson for San Andreas 2, a sequel to Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, and the classic video game flick, Rampage.
