Trailer For 'Kicks' Follows A Dangerous Quest To Retrieve Stolen Kicks
What would you do for a fresh pair of sneakers? How far would you go to get your sneakers back? Believe it or not, we live in a society where people die over their shoes, and it's a startling, sad commentary on how things are today. The truth is that shoes are more than just footwear, they are a sign of personal status and self-worth. So what do you do when something like that is stolen from you? In Justin Tipping's new film, Kicks, you do everything in your power to get them back.
Looking like Dope and Menace II Society meets The Bicycle Thief , Tipping's film stars Jahking Guillory as 15-year-old Brandon, a poor kid growing in Oakland. So he's never been able to have the dopest gear, which means the girls don't notice him, the bigger guys bully him, and there's not much hope of ever amounting to anything. That changes when he pulls together enough cash to buy a hot pair of kicks and begins to feel the power having them brings. But just then he is physically attacked and the shoes stolen right off his feet, with the rest of the film following Brandon as he tries to retrieve them. And judging off this footage he's going to grow into the man he always wanted to be along the way.
The film debuted at Tribeca and I'm surprised I haven't heard more about it because this trailer is great. Definitely one I'll be keeping an eye out for. Also starring Christopher Jordan Wallace (Notorious B.I.G.'s son), Mahershala Ali (The Hunger Games: Mockingjay), Christopher Meyer, and Kofi Siriboe, Kicks opens September 9th.
