Disney continues to mix it up when it comes to their Disney princesses. On the small screen they've just introduced their first Hispanic one over on the Disney channel series Elena of Avalor. And later this year they'll head to the South Pacific for Moana, a seafaring adventure about Disney's first Polynesian heroine.
The latest trailer actually centers on Moana (voiced by Auli'i Cravalho) and not the demi-god voiced by Dwayne Johnson, so that's a welcome touch. The footage features the ever-so-cute baby Moana and includes some of the gentle musical score you can expect to listen to. It's a wonderfully poetic piece that doesn't really divulge into the plot at all, but establishes Moana's deep connection to the ocean. Here's the synopsis:
Three thousand years ago, the greatest sailors in the world voyaged across the vast South Pacific, discovering the many islands of Oceania. But then, for a millennium, their voyages stopped – and no one today knows why. From Walt Disney Animation Studios comes “Moana,” a sweeping, CG-animated adventure about a spirited teenager who sails out on a daring mission to prove herself a master wayfinder and fulfill her ancestors’ unfinished quest. During her journey, Moana (voice of Auli’i Cravalho) meets the once-mighty demi-god Maui (voice of Dwayne Johnson), and together, they traverse the open ocean on an action-packed voyage, encountering enormous fiery creatures and impossible odds.
Opening on November 23rd, Moana is directed by Ron Clements and John Musker (Aladdin, The Princess and the Frog) from a script co-written by Thor: Ragnarok's Taika Waititi and Zootopia's Jared Bush.
