You're going to see a number of films pop up that look like potential Oscar contenders, and honestly most of them have that kind of potential...right now. Only a few will truly emerge, of course, and one that has been talked about as a definite possibility because of its remarkable true story is Lion, which casts Dev Patel in a role somewhat similar to his breakout turn in Slumdog Millionaire.
USA Today has new images from the heartwarming drama, directed by Garth Davis (Top of the Lake) and starring Nicole Kidman and Rooney Mara. The photos reveal a fully-maned Patel, appropriate considering the title and the real-life person he plays, Saroo Munshi Khan. At the age of 5, Saroo was separated from his family in Northern India, ending up thousands of miles way in Kolkata where he learned to survive on the streets until he was taken in by an Australian family. All the while he continued searching for his family with only his memories, and Google Maps of course, to aid him.
Get ready to have your heartstrings properly plucked. The trailer arrives next week but for now you can check out these photos. Lion opens on November 25th but will make its world premier at the BFI London Film Festival.
