Hard to believe it's been three years since Alfonso Cuaron's Gravity earned him the Oscar for Best Director, an award he's long been worthy of. Since that time he's entertained a few offers, most notably Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, but decided to wait until the right time and the right film. It appears he's now found both.
Deadline reports Cuaron will write and direct a '70s-set movie about a middle class Mexican family. The untitled movie will be backed by Participant Media and filmed in Mexico, Cuaron's first there since 2001's hit Y Tu Mama Tambien. Given the time period, small-scale setting and class distinction I wouldn't be surprised if Cuaron goes political for the first time in quite a while. Whatever he does, seeing him return to his roots is tremendously exciting.
Further details are unavailable except that shooting should begin soon, meaning we could get it as soon as next year. Perhaps in time for the fall awards season?
