If you needed evidence Pacific Rim 2 (possibly titled Pacific Rim: Maelstrom) would be looking to get as clear away from what Guillermo Del Toro did before, look no further than the casting. Nobody from the original movie seems to be returning at this point, with Star Wars: The Force Awakens' John Boyega, Suicide Squad's Scott Eastwood, and now singer/actress Cailee Spaeny making up the cast.
Variety reports on Spaeny's addition, making this her biggest role to date after appearing in the indie film Counting to 1,000. Boyega will play the son of Idris Elba's character from the first movie, while details are unclear about everyone else. We also don't know much of anything about the plot but you can expect plenty of robot vs. kaiju action.
Steven S. DeKnight is directing with plans for the film to hit theaters on February 23rd 2018.
