1. Boo! A Madea Halloween- $27.6M
We haven't been able to say this for a couple of years, but Tyler Perry is back at the top of the box office. Surprisingly, the little-marketed Boo! A Madea Halloween opened with $27.6M, defeating Tom Cruise's Jack Reacher sequel pretty handily. It had been diminishing returns for the Madea franchise as audiences grew out of watching him wear a dress, but three years away was long enough to bring those people back, apparently. We could be seeing the return of these movies popping up on a regular basis again, and as we know, how Madea goes so does Tyler Perry's other films. A rising tide lifting all boats, so to speak.
2. Jack Reacher: Never Go Back (review)- $23M
Tom Cruise's Jack Reacher opened in 2012 with $15M before taking in a solid $218M worldwide, most of it from overseas. Nothing extraordinary, but Cruise wanted a sequel and he got one. Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, which adds director Ed Zwick and welcome co-star Cobie Smulders, opened higher with $23M, $54M worldwide. That's a good start but not a great one. Chances are it won't hang around as long domestically, so if it's going to match the previous total it will need some help. The budget remains the same at roughly $60M so it should have no problem turning a profit for Paramount. And if it earns them anything then the studio will likely proceed with another film as long as it keeps Cruise happy.
3. Ouija: Origin of Evil (review)- $14M
By most accounts, Mike Flanagan's Ouija: Origin of Evil is a better horror than the 2014 film that preceded it. However, this one isn't going to be the hit that one was for a variety of different reasons. The sequel, really a prequel set in the 1960s, opened with just $14M, which still isn't bad considering it only cost $9M. Ouija opened with $19M on the same weekend two years ago and legged it out to $103M. But audiences were gunshy this time because the first movie wasn't very good, and there's considerably more competition to contend with this time. It should get a decent Halloween boost (assuming everyone doesn't go to Boo! A Madea Halloween), and no matter what it's already made money.

7. Keeping Up with the Joneses (review)- $5.6M
This? This is what Jon Hamm and Gal Gadot gets you? A measly $5.6M? It's probably more like this is to be expected from a Zack Galifianakis movie nowadays. Keeping Up with the Joneses , which finds Don Draper and Wonder Woman as super spies in what should be a no-brainer comedy hit, floundered worse than Galifianakis' recent flop, Masterminds, so let's put all of the blame on him. The marketing for this one was positively archaic, although to be fair so is the movie which feels like a relic from the late '80s. All involved, and that includes co-star Isla Fisher who plays Galifianakis' nosy suburban wife, deserve much better than this.
