Jennifer Lawrence Is Zelda Fitzgerald In New Biopic, Ron Howard May Direct
Hollywood continues to have a fascination with the Jazz Age and the colorful characters within it. Woody Allen built an entire fantasy/romance out of it in his last decent film, Midnight in Paris (shut up, Blue Jasmine fans). There was also The Great Gatsby by Baz Luhrman and to a lesser extent the literary drama, Genius. One figure who came to personify the music and the color and the erratic energy of the era was Zelda Fitzgerald, and she will be the center of a new biopic starring Jennifer Lawrence.
According to Variety, Lawrence will star in Zelda, which Ron Howard is developing as potentially his next directing gig. As the wife of acclaimed author F. Scott Fitzgerald, Zelda struggled to get out of his shadow and find her own voice. Emma Frost (Shameless) will pen the screenplay, and you can bet the mental instability that plagued Zelda's life will be included.
In some ways Lawrence may have been preparing for this role all along. From Silver Linings Playbook to American Hustle to Serena she has often played larger-than-life women who struggled to fit in with societal norms. No word on when filming will begin but it probably depends on Howard and if he tackles the project himself.
