[SPOILERS] When all is said and done it's expected there will be five Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them movies. The first one featured Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander, carrying his briefcase of magical creatures that terrorized New York. But the end of the film teased a different storyline, a darker one, and it seems that will be taking the spotlight in future installments.
The big revelation at the end of 'Fantastic Beasts' was MACUSA member Percival Graves (Colin Farrell) was actually the dark wizard and Albus Dumbledore nemesis Gellert Grindelwald, played by Johnny Depp. We know Grindelwald and Dumbledore will have increased roles in latter movies, but and according to producer David Heyman they may push Scamander into the background. He tells Cinemablend...
"I don’t think [Newt will be at] the heart of all of them. I think he’ll be part — so will Tina, Queenie and Jacob — will be part of the next one. "[Dumbledore] and Credence and Grindelwald. I think they will be the main players."
That's interesting because Credence, who is played by Ezra Miller, appeared to die at the end of the movie. But then we're talking about powerful mages here and little is ever as it appears. It sounds like we'll be getting to see that famous duel between Dumbledore and Grindelwald, and an exploration of their relationship which may have been romantic.
I'm a little disappointed that we'll be seeing less of Newt and his friends, especially Jacob who has quickly become my favorite Potterverse character, but in a way it makes sense. Just by the title alone we know that this franchise isn't going to focus on any one character. This could make it more of an anthology series exploring different corners of J.K. Rowling's universe, and that to me has a ton of potential. The whole thing spans a total of 19 years, covering a lot of territory in the Wizarding World.
We'll find out more when the 'Fantastic Beasts' sequel arrives in November 2018.
