Interview: Jeff Nichols And Joel Edgerton On Civil Rights Drama, 'Loving'

In every way imaginable Jeff Nichols' Loving emulates the courageous duo at its core. Richard and Mildred Loving, the interracial couple whose Supreme Court case ended anti-miscegenation laws, weren't seeking attention. They had no desire to be seen as heroes; they just wanted to be able to love one another and keep to themselves. Nichols' film takes an appropriately understated approach to their story, led by the director's detailed style and two powerful performances by Ruth Negga and Joel Edgerton.

Just as quiet has been any mention of an Oscars campaign. I've mentioned from time to time here that I think Loving has the edge on other movies dealing with race this season, because it truly has the power to unite. I still feel that way, even more so after speaking with Nichols and Edgerton while they were in town to promote the film. We talked about the responsibility that comes with telling such an important story, especially at a time like this. Edgerton also revealed that he didn't know about the Lovings because they weren't people you'd generally hear about in Australia.
