James Wan's 'Mortal Kombat' Reboot Scores A Director
Nobody's been able to punch in the combo for a Fatality on the Mortal Kombat franchise yet. After a hit film in 1995, a successful web series, and a media empire to go along with the long-running video games, James Wan came aboard to produce a big screen reboot last year. Well now we know who will be directing since, sadly, Wan can't do it himself. Instead it'll be Simon McQuoid, who has a background in commercials based on video games, which kind of makes him an expert.
McQuoid has directed commercials for the Halo first-person shooter games, and one featuring a table of Sony Playstation's characters. So at least when it comes to marketing his movie he should have it pretty easy. Bringing Mortal Kombat back to any kind of screen prominence will be tougher, though. There hasn't been a movie since the 1997 sequel, Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, which had all of the appeal of having your heart ripped out by Kano, or being eaten by a dragonized Liu Kang.
If you know anything about Mortal Kombat it's the wicked violence. Remember the controversy over the original game in 1992? Hopefully this new movie retains some of that edge and doesn't try to go soft to achieve a PG-13 rating. [Variety]
