Almost every day for the last month the Logan social media account has been teasing the film through stark black & white images. So far it's worked for establishing a tone that is desolate and lonely for the X-Man's final movie and the last time we'll see Hugh Jackman in the role. Well now Empire has debuted a new full color photo featuring Jackman and co-star Dafne Keen as X-23.
Speaking of the movie's tone, director James Mangold told Empire that he wanted to keep this movie as stripped down and raw as possible, perfect for a story that finds Logan older, scarred, and wrestling with the sum total of his life...
“The goal was to make something human,” says Mangold. “We made an effort to scale back on the gloss and greenscreen.”
Jackman adds, "It's essential you see this as the story of a man who is struggling with mortality and legacy, and whether the world has been better off with him or without him."
All of this jibes with what Mangold wrote on the second page of the screenplay, in which he warns that this movie won't be like the others out there with powers flying around everywhere and action so big it can't have personal consequences. Nope, this movie will be very different indeed...
Now might be a good time to talk about the ‘fights’ described in the next 100 or so pages. Basically, if you’re on the make for a hyper choreographed, gravity defying, city-block destroying CG fuckathon, this ain’t your movie.
In this flick, people will get hurt or killed when shit falls on them. They will get just as hurt or just as killed if they get hit with something big and heavy like, say, a car. Should anyone in our story have the misfortune to fall off a roof or out a window, they won’t bounce. They will die.
As for our hero, well, he’s older now and it’s clear his abilities aren’t what they once were. He’s fading on the inside and his diminished healing factor keeps him in a constant state of chronic pain — hence booze as a painkiller.
Hell yes. Count me in. Logan opens next year on March 3rd.
