If you were born between 1975 and 1985 Jim Henson was a huge part of your childhood, more than likely. The Muppets, Fraggle Rock, Labyrinth, countless properties from that time were members of or directly inspired by the Henson house. One of it's most popular and, through time endearing, properties was The Dark Crystal. If you haven't seen it since you were a kid do me a favor, watch it again...this was a DARK movie. I don't mean dark in the way that Spongebob is mature, with side jokes thrown in here and there, I mean this film was downright terrifying at times. I'm not sure how Chucky scared me as a kid but I'd watch this flick over and over without nightmares. Netflix is doing humanity another solid and bringing back the world of The Dark Crystal for another go in The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. I would always be worried about the properties adapted from the 80s...no one seems to get that it was their charming lo-tech look that was endearing and would end up updating the source material but not the look. I'm happy to say that, as you can see in the teaser video below, they are adapting this property the proper way, muppet-style! Sure, you could say that a teaser showing bits of the story would be more effective but I think the way they went, highlighting that they are doing it the same way they did originally, is genius. It lets you know you're being welcomed back to a familiar world. From the look of the one muppet we see it's due to be just as terrifying as it's predecessor. It will be interesting to see if this ends up being a novelty film just for the nostalgic or if it actually catches on with kids today. It will be a while until we find out as shooting isn't slated to begin until fall, but it's good to know we'll have something to look forward to in the years to come with Netflix!
