If you've never read Matt Ruff's novel Lovecraft Country, it's a fascinating exploration of H.P. Lovecraft's horror stories with the racism of 1950s Jim Crow America. Jordan Peele pulled off a similar combination of genre and social critique in his breakout film, Get Out, which makes him the perfect guy to adapt Lovecraft Country for the small screen, at HBO no less. That's right, Jordan Peele is working with HBO on another of his social thrillers. Check please, sign me up, count me in, me too, yes please, etc.
Not only is Peele working with HBO, but J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot and Warner Bros. TV are involved, as well. Damn, son. Peele will exec-produce the series with Misha Green (Underground) acting as writer and showrunner of what's being described as “an anthological horror series that reclaims genre storytelling from the African-American perspective”. HBO is playing around, either, as they've ordered it straight to series.
Lovecraft Country follows black sci-fi fan Atticus Turner and his family as they experience “both mundane terrors of white America and malevolent spirits" while traveling through America during the time of Jim Crow in search of Attitcus' missing father. The best part about this is Peele landing the project at HBO where he can do pretty much anything he wants, and get as deep into the race issue as he feels is warranted.
