NEW THIS WEEK
This
star-studded raunchy comedy from the minds behind Broad City centers on
local politician and bride to be Jess (Scarlett Johansson), and the wild
bachelorette weekend her old college friends have planned for her. Their night
of partying quickly takes a hard left turn, when they accidentally kill a local
male stripper in their rented beach house. Dark, madcap hilarity ensues, as the
women try everything they can think of to get themselves out of this situation.
We Said: “The boundaries of
decency are frequently pushed to the limit and the script by Aniello and
co-star Paul W. Downs doesn't pull back...well, until the end which wraps up
too neatly. There are penis jokes everywhere, but to be fair male comedies have
those too...sometimes more, actually, and plenty of frank gags about sex that
are good for a laugh even when they're uncomfortable. […] And that's pretty
much how Rough Night goes, throwing one insane situation after the
other, each increasingly more outrageous.” Rating:

Based
on the inspiring true story of the eponymous Leavey, the film follows Megan
[Kate Mara] and the dog who changed her life, and saved many others. Following
a disciplinary hearing, Leavey, a Marine corporal by trade, is assigned to train
service dogs in their K-9 unit for an extended period of time. Although initially
resentful of her assignment, Leavey soon forms a strong bond with Rex, a
particularly aggressive dog, who she identifies with, trains, and befriends.
Together, the pair are eventually deployed to Iraq, where they heroically put
their lives on the line to save their fellow servicemen.
We Said: “Fortunately, where Megan
Leavey succeeds is in the interactions between [Kate] Mara and her
canine co-star, Varco, the dog who plays Rex in the majority of shots. The film
pays proper tribute to our soldiers, ALL of them, even the four-legged variety,
in a subtle but moving way..” Rating: 3 out

The
long awaited Tupac biopic, All Eyez on Me tells the story of Shakur
(Demetrius Shipp Jr.), rising from his early days in streets of New York to the
legendary rap game-changer we now know him to have been. The film chronicles
the tragic life and death of the artist, following him as he grows and shapes
his brutally honest, powerful poetry into the voice of a generation, and faces
the violent fallout of his controversial message.
