If there's a potential frontrunner for Best Animated Film, it's the Angelina Jolie-produced The Breadwinner. Hey, there aren't a ton of contenders right now, are there? Unless you were hoping for The Boss Baby? The film is directed by Nora Twomey and based on Deborah Ellis' bestselling book about a young girl in Afghanistan who dresses as a boy so she can work and feed her family after her father is imprisoned.
The latest trailer shows off the simple, beautiful animation from the folks at Cartoon Saloon. They're the ones behind previous Oscar nominees The Secret of Kels and Song of the Sea, so they've got loads of cred.
This is Jolie's second film this year about young female protagonists learning to persevere on their own. The other is Netflix's First They Killed My Father, and if things go as planned Jolie could be looking at two Oscar contenders.
The Breadwinner opens November 17th.
