Mamet to Re-Write the Diary of Anne Frank

Legendary screenwriter David Mamet has been tapped to write/direct a new film based on the life of Anne Frank. If you don't know who Anne Frank is, then there's no hope for you. The film, which will be a combination of The Diary of Anne Frank; the stage play; as well as some of Mamet's own interpretations is one that the producer has been attempting to acquire the rights to for well over a year. The project is being produced by Mamet, as well as Andrew Braunsberg.

Under anybody else's guidance I'd be worried about an updated Anne Frank tale. I remember watching The Diary of Anne Frank as a kid(who doesn't?) and reading the book, and to this day it's one of the most gut wrenching stories. I can't read it anymore, it's just too sad. Considering the wealth of personalities in that story, Mamet is a great choice to helm the project. He has an undeniable ear for movie dialogue, even if it can be a bit cliched at times. I think his experience both as a screenwriter and with the theater will aid him greatly. I'm very curious to see how this plays out.
