I'll admit it, I was too scared to watch Fright Night when it first released back in 1985. I was 8 years old. Gimme a break. A couple of years later, I did finally check it out and found it to be a cheesy, but entertaining horror flick. Anything with Roddy McDowell and a pre-Married with Children Amanda Bearse is going to keep me occupied.
We've known for awhile that Dreamworks was looking at remaking the cult horror film. Marti Noxon, who wrote for Buffy the Vampire Slayer, is penning the script, but we had no clue who would direct...until now. Craig Gillespie, best known for helming the Ryan Gosling dramedy Lars and the Real Girl, has signed on to direct the film.
The original Fright Night starred William Ragsdale as a teen who discovers that his neighbor(Chris Sarandon) may be a vampire serial killer. He enlists the aid of his friends and a retired vampire hunter(Roddy McDowell) to put an end to his rampage. Fright Night earned over $24M at the box office that year and was only bested in the horror genre by A Nightmare on Elm Street 2. A sequel was released in 1988 featuring much of the same cast.
