Oh shucks. Fans of AMC's hit TV series, Mad Men, are no doubt taking a mournful puff of their cigars this morning, as Jon Hamm went on Live with Regis and Kelly and denied any involvement in Superman: Man of Steel. For those who missed it, a couple of days ago a rumor began circulating that Warner Brothers was "seriously considering" the actor to don the red and blue tights. Probably should've wrote about it then, but I never took it seriously enough.
I sometimes fall into this trap, too, but I think far too many times we forget that studios have a list a mile long of potential candidates for all of their major films. Hamm was probably in their consideration list, and still might be, but as of now it's clear that nothing is underway.
I had this conversation with a colleague of mine, Brandon Fibbs(read his reviews, folks.), and after being skeptical of his ability to pull off playing Clark Kent, I figured that there's only one scenario in which Hamm could be a perfect fit. If Christoper Nolan decides to ditch the Superman as boyscout routine that's been burned into our brains thanks to Christopher Reeve, and perhaps takes a darker route with an older(Hamm is nearly 40), more cynical version then Hamm could be an inspired choice. Would anybody be surprised if Nolan went that route? I wouldn't.
Those itching for an extra slice of Hamm can find him putting on quite a show in Ben Affleck's The Town, opening today. Do yourself a favor and check him out there. You won't be disappointed.
