The Sunday Drive: 9/5/10

3. Going the Distance
Real life couple Justin Long and Drew Barrymore(they're still together, right?) charm as a lovestruck couple struggling to make their relationship work from opposite coasts. Rarely does a romantic comedy balance the sweet with the sour, the highs and the lows of an actual mature relationship the way this one does. It doesn't hurt that the script is a perfect fit for the two leads. Not always the happiest comed you'll see this year, but one that will strike an emotional chord or two.

2. Animal Kingdom
Jacki Weaver instantly catapults herself into the pantheon of most evil screen mothers as Janine Cody. As the murderous, manipulative matriarch of a crumbling crime family, she casts a terrifying shadow over David Michaud's riveting epic.

1. Machete
That Machete is one bad mutha...shut yo mouth! How much do you wanna bet that if Robert Rodriguez's insanely bloody, oddball revenge flick fails you'll see Jan Brewer on TV talking about how it's just another sign that people support her draconian immigration bill? It's not like Machete was made in response to it, as production began months before the law ever pass. But if it's a hit? If it resonates with people the way I think it will, how much you wanna bet a few Arizona politicians will be holed up in their strongholds for a few months in case the gardener decides to get creative with a weedwacker?

DVD Pick of the Week: Harry Brown
It's been a stellar couple of years for the geriatric vigilante set. Somebody must've spiked their metamucil with adrenaline. In Harry Brown, the always reliable Michael Caine unleashes silver-haired vengeance on the thugs and drug dealers who've turned his neighborhood into crap street. The gorgeous Emily Mortimer stars as the cop who's close on his trail, but sympathizes with his cause.
