When it was learned last week that Darren Aronofsky(
Black Swan) had turned down an offer to direct
Gangster Squad for Warner Brothers, the likely assumption was that it was to leave a path open for him to take over the reigns of the sequel to
X-men Origins: Wolverine. Looks like that's finally come to pass, as
Deadline is reporting that the deal is complete enough that sound stage shooting has already begun in New York.
Filming is set to begin in March, primarily in Japan per Christopher McQuarrie's samurai/ninja centered script. Aronofsky will be reuniting with Hugh Jackman, who starred in
The Fountain
for the auteur back in 2006.
Still seems like an odd fit, but again I said the same thing about Christopher Nolan and
Batman
, and that turned out reasonably well. Don't you think?
