There was never any doubt in my mind that we'd see another Jason Bourne flick. Now ask me whether or not I thought it would be any good. The answer? Hell. No. With both Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass being more than a bit shaky on their involvement, the third leg of the Bourne trifecta was writer Tony Gilroy. Gilroy hasn't been pleased with his Greengrass's handling of the franchise and has been pretty open about it. He calls
The Bourne Ultimatum merely the movie that allowed him to make his directorial debut,
Michael Clayton
. Yikes.
In a lot of ways, Bourne is Gilroy's baby. He's written the script for all three films, so was there any way he could consider coming back even without Greengrass and Damon? Apparently so, as
Deadline is reporting that he has not only completed a script for the film, titled The Bourne Legacy, but is now also in talks to direct.
This would be Gilroy's third directorial effort after last year's
Duplicity
. The question is what form the story takes. There were rumors of a prequel of sorts, featuring a younger Jason Bourne in case Matt Damon isn't involved. That could still be the case.
